STUDENT LED CONFERENCES:

Hi everyone.... excitement is building over the Student Led Conferences!  Miss Hair was wandering around today, chatting to Ara Pakeke children about how they are going with their conference preparations, and commented that there was a real feeling of enthusiasm about them!

We have 26 conferences booked now - thank you to Room 8 families for supporting your children. It really adds to the feeling of anticipation and primes the children to do the best job they can, because:
a) they're running the conference
b)they are presenting to some of the most influential people in their lives, so it's a big deal for them!

OTHER EVENTS:

In the midst of the Student Led Conferences, we have 2 other events occurring next week, Week 8:
Athletics Day and Family Night. (phew!!)

ATHLETICS DAY:  Thursday 3rd December, Trusts Stadium.  Letter from Mr Leaity to come home.

WEEK 6....

Hi everyone!

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES...

Well, the production of some WONDERFUL work for showing parents at the Student Led Conferences is well underway!
We will be working on this for most of this week, so as to have top quality work to show parents, and to build our confidence in presenting during our big moment!

If your child is presenting on a poster, would you mind supporting them by buying one or two pieces of poster card to put their work on please? They are available at most $2 shops, usually sitting in a rack display. It would go along way towards helping your child present their work with pride.

Below is a reposting of the Student Led Conference times and dates available... please be quick to book, so you don't miss out on this exciting event!

What is a student led conference?
The purpose of student led conferences is to put the student in the driving seat to share their learning with parents or caregivers. They are a celebration of learning and an initiative to further build on ‘student voice and empowerment’.  Teachers have observed how students enjoy taking more ownership over their learning therefore they will be present in the interview to offer support and prompts to the child if necessary.

If you have behavioural concerns or matters you would like to discuss directly with the teacher, a time outside of the student led conference needs to be arranged.

The research around student led conferences
Research has shown that developing a student’s ability to talk about their progress and learning leads to greater student achievement.  At Arahoe we believe the learning needs to be visible and students need to be able to articulate their progress and respond to questions like:
• How I am going?
• Where am I going?
• What is my next learning step?

Professor John Hattie (formerly University of Auckland)  recently published a revised list of the most effective influences on student achievement which identifies student self-reporting as the most significant indicator linked to raised student achievement.  Two other international researchers, Black & Wiliam (1998) further comment, "the process of students reflecting on their learning, through effective questioning that promotes the articulation of student thinking, and is integral to classroom assessment practices that enhance student learning".

If the focus is to be kept on learning, and the ownership of the learning with the child, then the best person to talk about the learning is the learner.  Not only is the student the best person to tell their parents what they have learnt, but if we believe that students build their knowledge by communicating what they know, then providing an opportunity for the students to tell their family what they know can significantly assist with that learning (Absolum, 2006).

Research also shows parental involvement in schools and classrooms has a positive impact on children’s learning (Bastiani & Epstein, 1988).  In helping to strengthen the partnership between the learner, the teacher and the parent, we believe student led conferences promote some ways learning can also be supported at home. This is a key goal in the introduction of National Standards in New Zealand schools.

Important things to remember
  • Your child will run this conference—not you, not the teacher! Your child must be here.
  • As part of their regular learning, all students have been putting considerable time and energy into preparing for this. If you cannot attend, please arrange for another significant adult in your child’s life to come to the conference.
  • The conference is about showcasing your child’s learning through the key competencies and acknowledging their progress in reading, writing and maths and their goal for next year.

Follow up survey
After you and your child have participated in the student led conference you will have the opportunity to share your thoughts about how you think it went and what can be done to improve it for next time. A link to a Google survey will be attached to your child’s classroom blog.

MATHS:

Please continue to support your child at home with learning their basic facts. We will be having our 3rd round of testing this Friday, and some people are SO CLOSE to moving up a level!

Mrs de Jong noticed from the last tests that the accuracy was improving, and now the speed needs to improve to get the pass mark.

Enjoy your week!

WEEK 4 CONT....
OOPS! Not sure how that happened!!!  Anyway, back to the Key Competencies...

So these are what we have up in our Topic corner to remind us of the KC's:

Here is some information about the Student Led Conferences from Miss Hair:

Student-Led Conferences

This term,  Ara Pakeke is introducing Student Led Conferences (SLCs) which provide the opportunity for students to celebrate their successes with family and whanau.  An SLC is a meeting run by the student for his or her parent and is entirely focused on the student’s recent learning.  During the conference your child will share a presentation relating to their research on the topic theme of ‘light’.  Your child will also highlight how they have developed some of their key competencies (thinking, managing self, using language, symbols and texts, relating to others, participating and contributing) during this process.

Successful learners use the key competencies to live, learn, work, and contribute as active members of their communities; they are the key to learning in all curriculum areas.  As your child develops these key competencies, they become more confident in knowing when, why and how to use them.
Ara Pakeke would like to send an invitation for you to join your child at an SLC towards the end of Term 4 (date and times yet to be advised).  Please note that in Term 4, Ara Pakeke students will have no interviews in Week 5.  Details regarding dates and how to book an SLC will be sent out nearer the time.  As well as on your child’s classroom blog, details will be included in the school and syndicate newsletter, website and school app.  Please don’t hesitate to contact Jocelyn Hair (Ara Pakeke Learning Leader at jocelynh@arahoe.school.nz) or your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions around SLCs.
Kind Regards
Jocelyn Hair and Ara Pakeke Teachers

~So now in Week 4, we will be looking at the Blendspaces (online activities), to help us decide what we would like to base our SLC on.
These are the links to the different class Blendspaces...

~Room 4:  Electric Light Circuits

~Room 5:  Loy Krathong - Thailand

~Room 6: Diwali

~Room 7: This Little light of mine -finding my lights

~Room 8: Light is made up of colours  (making a colour spinner)

~Maths:
We will having another testing week this week (yes, it's that time of the year!), and the focus will be on general maths knowledge.
(Even Mrs de Jong is looking forward to getting back to more of a normal routine next week!)
In the meantime, we should keep practising our basic facts and spelling, because our second round of THOSE tests are coming up on Friday....because Room 8 just CAN'T get enough of TESTS!!!

By the way, there have been some AMAZING results from the last round of tests...lots of people moving up! We must have some real tryers out there in Room 8, just like the mighty ALL BLACKS!!!

 WELL DONE,
 ALL BLACKS!!!

WE'RE PROUD OF YOU!!

WEEK 4...

~Spring Fair:
Wow! What a fantastic day we had at the fair! The weather was gorgeous, and everyone was so happy!  We sold ALL of our things at the fair - SO COOL!  We even had people coming up afterwards to see if we had any more Jolly Jars coming in...we were a very popular stall!

Thank you VERY, VERY much to EVERYONE who helped out in SO many ways; stall work, marquee donation, bunting, selling raffle tickets, hamper donations, guess the lolly donation, chocolate donation, craft donations, and of course, JOLLY JARS!!!

Mrs de Jong was quite stunned by all of the help and donations - she told Room 8 that she actually had a dream about lots of jars coming in, but she didn't expect it to come true in such a FANTASTIC way!  She REALLY enjoyed the day (except for getting wet), and it will be exciting to see how much money our stall raised for Arahoe Community.

Here are some beautiful ladies getting ready to start selling our goodies before the fair started...

~Topic:
This term our Social Science topic is “Let Your Light Shine”.  We will be learning about the various aspects of light.
In Week 1, we discussed all that we know about light already (to establish prior knowledge) and we filled 3 big sheets with our knowledge !!
We are excited about all the things we could be learning this term.
While we know a lot about man-made light, natural light and light in culture/traditions, when we began to discuss what the light is within us, we were a bit unsure of how it fitted into our lives.
In Week 2, we went around 5 different classes to try out activities/experiments related to the Week 1 aspects of light, and see what we liked, and what interested us.
We talked about Key Competencies, and how they are the TOOLS FOR LEARNING, to help us achieve our goals - even adults need to use Key Competencies to have a successful life!
While we will be using some of every Key Competency in our learning, Room 8's special focus will be on the Key Competency of Self Management to help us produce something wonderful to show our families. We have these in our topic area to remind us of the KC's:

In Week 3, we reflected on the Week 2 activities, and started to think about what learning we would like to show our families in the Student Led Conferences (see below for more info).

We will be starting to look at the Blendspaces for the Rotation classes we went to in Week 2, and thinking about what we would like to present to our families for the Student Led Conferences.
